Ceramic Care

DERUM studio's ceramic products are made using various graades of earthern and stoneware clay. Each piece begins its life as a chunk of lumpy wet clay and handcrafted and carefully put through drying, bisqueing, glazing and firing processes. This includes drying cycles, 2 or 3 firings of up to 1300 degrees celcius, as well as handpainting and handfinishing in our little Sydney studio.

Due to the handcrafted nature of each piece you should expect slight variations in colour and shape. The beauty of handcrafted ceramics is that each piece is unique and full of character. If you do happen to have exact requirements, please do not hesitate to contact us prior to your order.

Ceramic wares should last a lifetime if cared for. It is recommended that they are handwashed and please do avoid putting them in the oven or microwave. To not transfer a piece directly from cold to hot or it will risk shattering.

The underside of your pot or back of jewellery may develop micro dirt where it is left unglazed. Use a soapy sponge to clean or gently wash with gumption if a little more oomph is needed. It is normal and expected (even celebrated!) that overtime a patina on the pot will develop giving it even more character and personality.

We use food grade glaze on all our pots so feel free to use them for your tastiest foods or to house your most precious jewels.
